The Canal House and Delaware City ... steeped in history

The Canal House was built in the 1830’s and was once a two story mule barn that housed mules to tow barges through the C&D Canal. The mules pulled the barges of coal and lumber through town each week.  When the canal was widened and moved to Reedy Point, the Canal House was converted into apartments.  The canal is now a branch channel open for boaters.

In 1954, Hurricane Hazel put much of Delaware City underwater.  The picture above is the Canal House during the flood.
